We at New York Road Runners believe running should be accessible to everyone. To help, we created NYRR Race Free to provide race fee assistance to those who qualify financially.
In 2024, we offered 1,000+ program slots and more than 3,000 complimentary race entries, including for the TCS New York City Marathon. Race Free applications that met the eligibility criteria were pooled based on previous participation and selected by borough or zip code until all slots were filled.
Check out the Race Free page this summer for updates on the 2026 application period. (Please note runners apply in 2025 for races in the calendar year of 2026.)

NYRR offers a limited number of entries to the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon to athletes who meet the time qualifying standards at a certified full marathon race that is not held by NYRR during the qualifying window from January 1, 2024–December 31, 2024. Half-marathon times will not be eligible for a non-NYRR time qualifier entry. All athletes who meet the time qualifying standards are invited to apply, however submission of a qualifying time does not guarantee entry. Should the number of applications exceed the number of spots available, entry will only be granted to the fastest of each age and gender category. Those who do not meet the cut-off for their age and gender category will be placed into the non-guaranteed general entry drawing.
Applications for Non-NYRR Time Qualifiers will be open from February 11 at 12:00 p.m. ET to February 18 at 11:59 p.m. ET. When applying for a Non-NYRR Time Qualifier entry, athletes must submit the name of the race they qualified at, the net (chip) time they achieved, and the URL for their results which NYRR can use to verify the qualifying time.
Once the application period for Non-NYRR Time Qualifier entries has closed on February 18, NYRR will review the applications submitted. If the number of applications exceeds the number of spots available, entry will be granted to the applicants in each age and gender category with the fastest qualifying times. Those accepted will have their credit card charged and will be notified of their acceptance via email before the drawing takes place on March 5, 2025. Those who not accepted or their credit card was declined, will be automatically moved to the non-guaranteed general entry drawing for another chance to be accepted into the race.
Visit Marathon Time Qualifiers page for more information.
Members of NYRR at the 5K and 10K level receive guaranteed entry to the TCS New York City Marathon among other annual benefits in thanks for their support of NYRR's mission to build healthier lives and stronger communities through the transformative power of running. Request information by emailing philmembership@nyrr.org.
Runners who do not have guaranteed entry to the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon can apply to the non-guaranteed general entry drawing during the application period from February 11 at 12:00 p.m. ET to February 25 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
The drawing for these entries took place on March 5.
The entries available to non-guaranteed applicants will be filled through three drawings, one in each of the following applicant pools:
1. "NYC metro area" applicants: Residents in and within 60 miles of New York City
2. "National" applicants: U.S. residents outside of the NYC metro area, including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories
3. "International" applicants: Non-U.S. residents
A drawing will be conducted within each applicant pool. To be selected, you must have provided a valid credit card, future expiration date, and authorization to charge. The provided credit card is charged when the applicant is drawn; if the charge is not approved, the applicant will be removed and another applicant will be drawn from the same applicant pool.
Once you submit the application into the non-guaranteed drawing, you have authorized NYRR to charge your credit or debit card a non-refundable entry fee upon acceptance into the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon. Your card must have an expiration date of April 2025 or later, and if you plan to pay using a debit card, please ensure that your card has enough funds to pay the entry fee.
Note: If you are accepted into the race through the drawing, the credit card saved as your default credit card will be charged $255 (members) or $315 (non-members). If you do not have a default card saved currently, the card entered at this time will become your default. Your default card must be valid through March 2025. After the application closes, NYRR will test the credit card you have on file by placing a $1 hold on the card. Please note that any hold you see on your card prior to the drawing does not mean you have been selected in the drawing. We are running this test for all runners who have applied to the drawing to make sure that anyone who is selected in the drawing is not prevented from gaining entry because of a credit card issue. To change your default credit card, sign in to your dashboard.
You can remove your name from the applicant pool prior to the drawing, but once you are accepted by any method, all fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable. NYRR does not contact applicants prior to accepting them in order to reconfirm that they wish to be selected.
Note: Handcycle and push-rim applicants should apply to the non-guaranteed entry drawing.
The rules applicable to the TCS New York City Marathon do not permit entry by a person intending to be pushed in a wheelchair, stroller or other piece of equipment by another person or persons. To be accepted for entry, applicants with disabilities planning to use a wheelchair or other allowable equipment must be able to push themselves through the marathon course. While official guides are permitted to accompany an entrant with a disability on the course, such guides cannot push the entrant through the course.
Note: Applicants interested in participating as a Duo Team can reach out to duoteams@nyrr.org. There will be a separate Duo Teams drawing in July of 2025.
If you are an athlete with a disability and have any questions regarding race entry, guides, or other circumstances please contact NYRR at nyrrawdteam@nyrr.org.
Current members of New York Road Runners who meet the eligibility criteria and apply to the non-guaranteed general entry drawing will automatically be entered into the NYRR Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing.
The NYRR Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing took place on March 5. Winners will NOT be automatically charged and registered into the race. Instead, they can expect to receive an invitation to register for the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon via email before March 31st. This invitation will be a private registration link specific to your account and may not be shared or transferred between athletes.
Members selected through the NYRR Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing are responsible for claiming their entry, registering for the race through their registration link, and paying the entry fee. They will see “Not Accepted” in their dashboard until they finalize their entry by completing the registration form and paying the entry fee.
Selected members will have until May 1 to register through this event page and pay their entry fee. Member-Only Second Chance Drawing entries not claimed by this date will be forfeited.
